For a compact collection with an existing audience, start with Big Cartel. For a store with named retail, channel, or integration requirements, evaluate Shopify. For a website that combines products with other business content, consider Wix or Squarespace. For a website you want to keep, evaluate Ecwid. Choose Setka when you want the platform to generate and change the branded storefront around your products.

Setka is our product. Our recommendation favors merchants who want to direct the store without maintaining its presentation implementation.

Decide what you are replacing

An Etsy seller can want three different things: another place where shoppers already browse, a branded website for independently acquired shoppers, or a different way to build and operate that website. This shortlist addresses the latter two. Adding one does not require leaving Etsy.

Your own store can be useful even when customers rarely buy twice. A niche gift seller might use it to explain which design suits which recipient and give a partner publication somewhere relevant to send readers. The buyer may never want that gift for themselves. The store still has a job: help the next independently acquired shopper choose. Name the content, partnership, campaign, or other route that will bring them there, and include its cost. Simply opening another channel does not make it productive.

If your main need is another marketplace, investigate marketplaces as a separate choice. Amazon Handmade requires application and approval, with eligible product categories and production requirements. Folksy’s seller-location policy is scoped to sellers living and working in the UK, with specified island exceptions. Those official rules were checked on 5 October 2026. Neither program belongs in a comparison of store software, and eligibility does not establish that it will supply profitable demand for your products.

Etsy itself offers Pattern, a branded website connected to the Etsy shop, priced at $15 USD per month after a 30-day trial, plus applicable tax. Its getting-started documentation, checked on 5 October 2026, says inventory is managed in Shop Manager and Pattern does not appear in Etsy marketplace search. Check that route if keeping Etsy administration is a priority. A branded domain still needs a traffic plan.

Match the shortlist to a selling situation

SetkaA generated store for separate, fixed-format productsA generated product-led storefront directed through a briefA full-store choice; preserving the existing website and its class setup is a separate decision

Catalog size is not the deciding column. A seller with five products may have a demanding presentation requirement; a seller with twenty-four products may be comfortable with a conventional editor.

For the stationery example, bring one buyer question to the trial as well as the products. A gift shopper unfamiliar with paper might need help choosing between a letter-writing set and a pack of cards, then clear pack contents and delivery information. A regular stationery buyer may want paper weight, finish, and dimensions. Gift buying and product knowledge are separate: an enthusiast buying a gift may want both. Check whether you can organize that explanation and update it for the next collection, rather than judging only the first attractive page.

Big Cartel: a compact creator store

Big Cartel’s Gold plan, checked on 28 September 2026, allows five product listings. Its plan table lists 50 products for Platinum and 500 for Diamond. Gold’s one-image-per-product allowance can matter before capacity does: a print might need both the artwork and a photograph that explains its scale or packaging.

The merchant chooses a template and works with its visual settings. Big Cartel’s customization guide also describes deeper code changes. Choose it when the compact catalog and supplied design controls suit the business, rather than assuming every distinctive layout will be equally simple to make.

Big Cartel says it charges no platform transaction fee; Stripe and PayPal processing fees remain separate. It is a store you promote yourself, not a marketplace that replaces Etsy search. The Big Cartel vs. Etsy comparison applies that distinction to a five-design print release.

Shopify: choose it for a named commerce requirement

Shopify’s Online Store documentation, checked on 28 September 2026, describes the hosted store, theme workflow, and custom-storefront route. Its commerce plan table covers online and in-person selling, channels, and plan-specific operational capabilities.

That makes Shopify worth evaluating when a fulfillment partner needs a particular connector, your business needs a retail setup, or another documented tool solves an actual operating problem. Specify the connector, service, and plan before treating the ecosystem as a benefit.

An existing website can also use Shopify’s Buy Button channel. You do not have to discard valuable pages to use Shopify commerce. For a full store, evaluate the theme and the future changes you expect to make; moving off Etsy does not automatically remove storefront implementation work. See Etsy vs. Shopify for the channel and cost decision.

Wix: products inside a broader business website

Wix combines website creation with business tools for a store, blog, and other offerings. Its current plans page, checked on 5 October 2026, offers prompt-based creation and drag-and-drop refinement. Core and higher visible cards list payments and e-commerce; the payment guide requires a plan that supports accepting payments and a provider available in the merchant’s location.

Wix is already an AI option. Its Aria guide documents conversational page, section, content, and settings changes, followed by manual adjustment when wanted. The same guide says Aria currently changes the desktop version, while mobile view is edited manually.

Consider Wix when the studio’s content, bookings, and products should remain in its Wix business setup. Compare the actual editing and operating sequence before moving. Our focused Wix alternative explains when directing a generated product storefront is the stronger reason to change.

Squarespace: a store within a content-led site

Squarespace is also more than a static template choice. Its Squarespace AI guide, checked on 5 October 2026, describes Blueprint AI creation and generated text, images, and style settings. Its September product update describes a personalized multi-page site that the merchant can preview and refine in the editor.

Consider it when the site itself does several useful jobs: explaining the studio, publishing stories, displaying a portfolio, and selling products. Test the route from an article to the relevant product, alongside the collection and product pages.

Plan fees need the sale type attached. Squarespace’s fee guide separates ordinary store products from digital content and memberships, and payment processing remains separate. Plan availability is rolling out by market, so use the plan offered to your account. Our Squarespace alternative focuses on the decision between preserving a useful content site and directing a product-led store.

Ecwid: keep the website and add commerce

Ecwid’s existing-website guide, checked on 28 September 2026, describes full catalogs, categories, product cards, and Buy Now buttons on existing sites. The merchant retains the surrounding website and its maintenance; the host must support the selected integration method.

This is a useful route for the studio that already has valuable articles and a working class system. Test a product embed inside a real article on mobile before committing the catalog.

Ecwid also has a complete hosted route through Instant Site. Its plan table, checked on 28 September 2026, gates catalog capacity and features: Starter’s ten products do not cover the twenty-four-design stationery scenario, while Venture’s 100-product allowance does. Page, domain, and blog requirements can move the plan choice further. Ecwid advertises zero platform transaction fees; payment-provider charges and the existing website bill remain separate.

Setka: direct the product storefront

Choose Setka when the part you want the platform to own is the store’s presentation implementation. You provide brand direction, audience, product facts, images, and commercial priorities. Setka builds the storefront from the brief and catalog within its commerce platform. You can describe refinements, edit exact wording, preview, and publish without maintaining a theme codebase.

For the stationery collection, a useful brief could be: “Separate everyday notes from gift cards, lead with the new illustrated series, and make paper size and pack quantity clear before purchase.” You review the generated result and refine it. Setka’s current payments use your connected Stripe account and one store currency; you still decide the prices, shipping rules, facts, and fulfillment.

The example assumes separate products with fixed specifications. Setka supports product variants. If the launch depends on particular size, color, or personalization combinations, tell us at [email protected] before you move: requests go straight to the people building Setka. If you need to preserve the studio website and class system, resolve that architecture before committing to a full-store replacement. Setka is not a drop-in commerce widget for that site.

For a first store, Setka usually costs much less than a theme-based platform. A Shopify store’s real price is the plan plus a theme, the developer or evenings spent adapting it, and the apps that fill its gaps; in Setka the store is built into the platform, so most of those costs never appear. See current pricing. Setka does not bring Etsy’s marketplace audience with it.

Bring one collection and one change to the final two

Shortlist the options that solve your actual reason for expanding beyond Etsy. Give each the same product facts and images, then make a change you expect to repeat after launch. Include subscription, payment processing, necessary tools, outside work, and customer acquisition in the budget. Compare that with your actual Etsy bill: its fee policy, checked on 5 October 2026, covers listings and renewals, transaction charges, separate bank-country processing, attributed advertising, applicable currency/tax charges, and a possible setup fee for new shops. Removing one fee does not establish the cost of the replacement channel.

Treat transfer as a separate project. Etsy’s download guide, checked on 5 October 2026, documents active listing fields and sold-order history in CSV. It does not promise a complete store, review, customer, or design migration. Check what the destination can actually accept. If you move to Setka, we run the migration for you: tell us at [email protected] what you have, and we’ll work out the move with you.

Etsy’s Seller Policy restricts buyer-data use and marketing without consent; its off-platform policy prohibits completing an Etsy-initiated transaction elsewhere. Plan a separate store for independently sourced traffic without treating Etsy buyers as an unrestricted marketing list.

If storefront implementation is the work you want to hand over, build your first collection in Setka. Use the preview to judge whether the products are being explained and sold the way you intended.
