Choose Big Cartel when you have a small collection, a way to bring shoppers to it, and want to run your own store through a creator-focused template. Choose Etsy when qualifying marketplace discovery is part of the selling plan. You can use both, but shared stock and channel administration need an explicit process.

Setka is our product: an own store that the platform generates and changes around your products. Like Big Cartel, that store needs an audience; it is not an Etsy marketplace replacement.

Five designs, fifty physical prints

Consider a fictional illustrator releasing five original designs, each in one fixed format, with ten copies of each. The catalog has five products and fifty units. Different catalog limits count products, not simply the total number of physical items on the shelf.

Big Cartel’s Gold plan, checked on 28 September 2026, allows five product listings, so this catalog fits the free plan’s product allowance. Platinum allows 50 products and Diamond 500 in its plan documentation. More capacity is not a reason to upgrade this five-design release; the specific presentation and operating features need to justify it.

Gold allows one image per product. For this print release, that can be the meaningful constraint: the shopper may need to see the artwork, paper surface, and packaged result. Paid plans document larger image allowances. Plan around what buyers need to understand, rather than treating a free entry as either automatically sufficient or inherently inadequate.

On Etsy, product eligibility comes first. Its Creativity Standards describe products made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller, with rules for each category. The standards captured on 15 August 2026 cover a seller’s original designs and relevant production-partner disclosure. Apply those rules to the actual production arrangement; a marketplace listing is not suitable merely because the catalog is small.

Where will the first twenty shoppers come from?

For this illustrator, two launch plans lead to different recommendations.

An established audience is waiting for the release. Newsletter readers and social followers already know the illustrator. A compact Big Cartel store can provide the destination. The merchant chooses a template, adds the five products, configures payments and delivery, and checks the purchase path.

The illustrator needs people who do not yet know the work. Etsy offers marketplace search and browsing as a possible discovery route. The listing needs to explain the print, fit Etsy’s rules, and earn attention among other results. Etsy’s Seller Policy, checked on 5 October 2026, describes factors that can affect visibility; listing the work does not guarantee visitors or purchases.

A direct store also lets unfamiliar people buy. The missing piece is how they arrive. “We will put the URL in our bio” is a destination plan; it needs a reason for the right people to visit the bio in the first place.

Make the image allowance and layout earn their place

Big Cartel’s customization guide describes templates, visual settings, custom pages on paid plans, and a code section for deeper changes. Many merchants can use the supplied controls. A requirement outside those controls can create custom implementation work.

For the print release, write three requirements before choosing a template:

  • Visitors can see all five designs together without confusing a sold-out print with an available one.
  • The product page makes the fixed dimensions, paper, and framing exclusion clear.
  • The images explain the appearance of the print and how it arrives.

Now read the page as two shoppers. A collector familiar with the artist may look for edition details, printing method, and paper. Someone choosing a housewarming gift may need to know how large it looks on a wall, whether a frame is included, and whether it can arrive by the occasion. A knowledgeable collector can also be buying a gift; intent and product knowledge are separate questions.

Etsy provides a familiar marketplace listing context. Big Cartel gives the illustrator a store presentation to configure. In either route, check that the images match the actual print, the dimensions agree, and delivery and returns information is easy to find before checkout. A considered layout helps present that evidence. Neither a template nor a listing supplies missing photographs or verifies the artist’s product claims.

Compare the bill for this release

Big Cartel’s processing-fees guide, checked on 28 September 2026, says Big Cartel does not charge a platform transaction fee. Stripe or PayPal processing charges remain separate. The five-product catalog may fit Gold, while needed images or other features may put the working store on a paid plan.

Etsy’s fees policy, checked on 5 October 2026, lists a $0.20 USD listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee on the displayed price plus seller-charged shipping and gift wrap. The transaction fee excludes US sales tax; outside the US, the listing price includes applicable taxes the seller is responsible for. Additional quantities sold and renewals can create additional listing fees. Payment processing applies to the order total including shipping and tax, with rates tied to the seller’s bank country. Attributed Offsite Ads and other country-specific charges can add to the total. A one-time, non-refundable shop setup fee may apply; its location-dependent amount is shown during onboarding.

For the fifty-unit release, budget the expected number of orders and units sold, not just the initial five listing fees. Keep unsold-listing renewals separate from charges caused by sales. Use your seller-country payment terms and actual ad participation.

An own store may reduce platform charges on an order while adding subscription, acquisition, and implementation costs. For an artist with an audience already waiting, the own store keeps more of each sale; for one who needs strangers to find the work, Etsy’s fees are the price of that discovery. Do not count an Etsy order as an own-store order unless you have a credible way to acquire it there.

If both channels sell the same stock

The fifty prints exist once. If each channel displays ten available copies of every design, they can promise more stock than the illustrator owns unless a demonstrated process keeps the quantities aligned.

A simple starting allocation could be six copies of each design for the own store and four for Etsy. Decide when unsold stock is reassigned, who changes quantities, and how refunds affect availability. If you use a connector, test the exact stock update and competing-order behavior before relying on it.

The channels also have separate messages, order records, and policies. Etsy’s off-platform rule, checked on 5 October 2026, prohibits taking an Etsy-initiated transaction elsewhere. Its buyer-data rules restrict marketing use without consent. A separately marketed store and diverting a marketplace transaction are different actions.

Etsy’s Pattern route offers another possibility: a branded site with inventory managed in Etsy Shop Manager. Its documented price, checked on 5 October 2026, is $15 USD per month after a 30-day trial, plus applicable tax. Etsy says Pattern is outside marketplace search. It is worth checking when shared administration is the priority, before taking on a separate platform.

When five products need a different storefront

If the illustrator likes Big Cartel’s templates and can bring shoppers to the release, that is a sound reason to choose it. Etsy is the stronger starting point when the seller wants to evaluate marketplace discovery for qualifying work.

Choose Setka when your own-store decision is about how the collection should be presented and changed. A brief might say: “Show the five designs as one series, explain the print dimensions before purchase, and use the artist’s story to connect the collection.” Setka generates the storefront from the brief and catalog within its commerce platform. You can describe a refinement, edit exact wording, preview, and publish without maintaining a theme codebase.

The example uses fixed-format prints. Setka supports product variants. If shoppers must choose sizes, frames, or personalization, tell us at [email protected] before you move: requests go straight to the people building Setka. You still supply the artwork, facts, prices, shipping rules, audience, and fulfillment.

If directing that presentation is your reason for an own store, start the collection in Setka and compare the generated pages with the buying requirements above.
