Choose Etsy when reaching shoppers inside a marketplace is central to your selling plan and your products qualify for it. Choose Shopify when you want a store on your own domain, can bring or build an audience, and need its commerce tools. You do not have to replace one with the other: Etsy can serve marketplace shoppers while an independently promoted store gives other shoppers a direct route to your work. Each channel still has to earn its acquisition and operating cost.
Setka is our product. Setka is another way to build your own store, for merchants who want the platform to build and change their storefront from a brief and catalog. That changes the implementation work; it does not supply Etsy’s marketplace audience.
Start with the next shopper
Imagine a printmaker selling one fixed-format art print. These are three different journeys:
| Where the shopper starts | What the seller needs | What the platform choice changes |
|---|---|---|
| Searching Etsy for an original print | A qualifying listing that explains the work and competes in marketplace results | Etsy supplies the marketplace context; visibility and sales are not guaranteed |
| Following the maker’s own newsletter or social post | A clear product page and purchase path | A store of their own lets the maker direct that presentation and destination |
| Reading a studio journal | A route from the story to the relevant product | The seller must decide whether to keep the journal, rebuild it, or add commerce to it |
Etsy’s Seller Policy, checked on 5 October 2026, describes how service and order signals can affect visibility. Being listed is an opportunity to be discovered, not a promise of visitors. On your own store, plan the channels that will bring people to the page: existing customers, content, partnerships, paid campaigns, or another credible route.
For the journal scenario, Shopify is not limited to rebuilding the whole site. Its Buy Button channel can embed products on a non-Shopify website. Its full Online Store channel provides the hosted storefront and requires Basic or higher in the documentation checked on 28 September 2026. Choose the path before comparing subscriptions.
Compare control through one real product
An Etsy listing uses the marketplace’s buying environment. You control the listing facts, images, prices, and policies within Etsy’s rules. You do not control every surrounding recommendation, page layout, or step of the marketplace experience.
Shopify gives the merchant an online store with a theme editor, product catalog, and commerce administration. Its Online Store documentation also describes custom storefront development when standard features do not meet the need. Many stores stay within a theme’s settings. A requirement the theme does not cover means an app or custom theme work.
For the printmaker, a useful requirement is: “Show the full artwork first, put the dimensions and paper details next to the purchase decision, and explain how the print is packaged.” Build or preview that route with your real information. Then change it: add a new collection story and promote a different piece. Judge how you make the second change as well as the first page.
If the operational reason to choose Shopify is retail selling, a fulfillment connection, or another sales channel, identify the exact tool and plan. Shopify’s commerce plan table documents online, in-person, and multichannel capabilities, with conditions that vary. A broad ecosystem is useful when it solves a problem you have.
Calculate what an additional order on your own store costs
Etsy’s fees policy, checked on 5 October 2026, lists a $0.20 USD listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee on the displayed item price plus seller-charged shipping and gift wrap. The transaction fee excludes US sales tax; outside the US, the listing price includes applicable taxes the seller is responsible for. Payment processing is separate, applies to the order total including shipping and tax, and depends on the seller’s bank country. Attributed Offsite Ads orders can add another fee. Renewals, currency conversion, and other applicable charges can change the total. A one-time, non-refundable shop setup fee may also apply; Etsy shows the location-dependent amount during onboarding.
Shopify’s pricing page separates the subscription, payment processing, and conditional third-party payment-provider transaction charges. Use the terms for your country, payment provider, plan, and billing period. Add the theme, necessary apps, and outside work you will actually buy.
A useful worksheet has four lines:
- Your store’s additional fixed monthly cost, including required tools.
- The platform-fee difference per comparable order, after payment processing.
- The additional cost of attracting that order to your store.
- The additional time or cost of operating the channel.
Here is a fictional example, not a Shopify quote. Suppose your own store adds $60 per month and saves $3 in platform fees per equivalent order. With no additional acquisition cost, 20 orders cover that fixed cost: $60 ÷ $3. If attracting each order costs another $2, only $1 remains, and the threshold becomes 60 orders. At $4 of additional acquisition cost, the assumed fee saving no longer covers acquisition, before the fixed bill is paid.
The example shows why “Etsy costs more per sale” cannot, by itself, establish that leaving Etsy is more profitable. Use your actual order mix and channel costs in a complete store budget.
Running both creates a second operating job
Give the two channels different jobs. Etsy can put the print in front of people browsing its marketplace. Your own store can be the destination for a studio article, a partnership with a framing shop, or a campaign for the new collection. Returning customers who independently visit the store can also buy there, with a direct relationship built through that store and any separately consented communications. That is a reason to add a channel, not a reason to assume every Etsy sale would have happened elsewhere.
Repeat purchases are not a prerequisite. Someone buying a print as a housewarming gift may never need another. Your own store can still give the maker a lasting address where new shoppers can learn about the work and buy it. Identify the route that will bring those shoppers; the address alone does not create demand.
For the printmaker, the two destinations could carry the same product or different collections. Decide who maintains prices, inventory, shipping promises, refunds, and messages in each place.
If only ten prints remain, do not expose all ten independently in both channels without a verified inventory process. Allocate stock to each channel or demonstrate that your chosen connection updates it as required. The existence of an integration does not prove how quickly it handles the competing orders that matter to your business.
Etsy also offers Pattern, a branded website managed alongside the Etsy shop, priced at $15 USD per month after a 30-day trial, plus applicable tax. Its getting-started guide, checked on 5 October 2026, says inventory remains managed in Shop Manager and the Pattern site does not appear in Etsy search. Pattern is worth considering when shared Etsy administration matters more than changing the platform. It still needs its own traffic.
Coexistence does not authorize diverting an Etsy sale. Etsy’s off-platform policy, checked on 5 October 2026, prohibits completing an Etsy-initiated transaction elsewhere. Its Seller Policy also restricts buyer-data use and adding buyers to marketing lists without consent. Receiving an email address with an order is not unrestricted permission to market to that person.
When the storefront is the work you want to hand over
Shopify earns its place when you want its selling environment and are comfortable configuring the store within it. Setka is a different way to build your own store when your main requirement is to direct the presentation without maintaining a theme implementation.
For the fixed-format print, you provide the product data, images, dimensions, brand direction, and commercial rules. Setka generates the storefront within its commerce platform. You can describe changes to the current page, edit exact words, preview, and publish. Every change saves a version of the whole storefront, and you can return to an earlier one.
You approve the facts and fulfill orders. Setka supports product variants. If your catalog depends on particular size, frame, or personalization choices, tell us at [email protected] before you move: requests go straight to the people building Setka. On the worksheet, Setka changes line 1. A Shopify store’s fixed cost is the plan plus a theme, necessary apps, and the developer or evenings spent adapting it; in Setka the store is built into the platform, so most of those costs never appear. For a first store of your own, Setka usually costs much less. See current pricing.
For a maker ready to build an independently marketed store, start in Setka with one representative product and the presentation change you want the platform to implement.
